Upcoming Changes to Microsoft Authenticator App Archived No-RSS

  • On Monday, February 6, 2023, IT Services staff will pilot a new MFA feature called “number matching.“

With this change, push notifications (prompts from the Microsoft Authenticator App asking you to Approve or Deny a login attempt) will change. On February 6, a two-digit number will appear within the login window of the device you are logging in with. Your Authenticator App will prompt you to enter the number on the device you use as your second factor (such as your cell phone). Unfortunately, Apple watches will not support this new feature.

The Authenticator App will also provide the location details of where the request originates from and the name of the application that is attempting to be authenticated.

Most VPN connections (except Azure SSL VPN) are not affected by this change, and the Authenticator App will continue to prompt with just an “Approve” or “Deny” button.

If there are any questions, comments, or concerns about this new feature, you can contact Sarah O’Reilly at sarah.oreilly@queensu.ca
