Gift card scam appears at Queen's Archived

Please circulate this message to members of your department.

If you receive a request (via email, social media, text message, or other medium) asking you to purchase gift cards on someone else's behalf, you may be the victim of a gift card scam.

This request may come from a stranger or from someone you know. You will be asked to purchase gift cards from a store and send the requestor the corresponding gift card number(s). Once the scammer has the number, they can use the balance on the gift card to make real purchases, and you have lost the cost of the card.

The scammer may attempt to build a rapport with you or convince you they are someone you know and that their request is legitimate.

If you receive this kind of request via your Queen's email address, please forward it to abuse@queensu.ca and delete it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the IT Support Centre at (613)533-6666.
