IT Services to Change Generic Assigned DNS Names - Tuesday, November 6, 2018 Archived
Queen's IT Services is updating naming conventions for generic public addresses.

Many workstations on campus have a public Internet address. Each of these public internet addresses is assigned an alias in order to be identifiable on the internet. These aliases communicate with services (such as email) to indicate that the address is known and is legitimate.

For example, IP address 130.15.48.119 has been assigned the alias S119.N48.queensu.ca. As of November 6, 2018 these aliases will be changing to a new format: S119-N48.gen.queensu.ca.

In most cases, you will not notice any interruption to service; however, this will affect people who run services (eg. web applications, databases, etc.) on their personal computers and use these generated aliases to access them. As of November 6, you will need to use the new aliases to continue to access these services.

Disclaimer: IT Services does not condone or recommend running services in this manner.

If you have any questions or notice an interruption to your service, please contact the IT Support Centre at 613-533-6666.
