Change to Default Version History Setting for SharePoint Online Document Libraries and OneDrive for Business Sites

On November 25, 2025 at 7:00 AM, the default file versioning setting for new SharePoint Online document libraries and OneDrive for Business sites will change to automatic, time-based version history retention.
Key details:
- This change applies exclusively to new document libraries created within new or existing SharePoint sites, as well as new OneDrive for Business sites.
- Existing SharePoint document libraries, existing OneDrive accounts, and version settings for SharePoint lists will not be affected by this change.
- The changes may take up to 24 hours to be reflected in newly created document libraries.
- Site owners will retain the ability to modify version history settings for their document libraries and lists as needed.
